Measure Your Pallet Racking

You may be under the impression that all pallet racking measurements are the same standard, but each system will differ in size by the brand as well as dimensions, lengths and capabilities.

This is why all pallet racking beams are to be measured accurately to ensure they are fit for their purpose around your specific work environment. Here we look at how to accurately measure your pallet racking to ensure your order and install the right racking for your needs.

Width and Depth

As mentioned earlier, standard racking beams are measured differently by different brands and vary in size. This leads to difficulty when fitting it to current shelving and racking units.

The standard width for pallets is around 40 inches, but you will need to determine the accurate size of your pallets to determine the size of the system required. By measuring the width of a pallet racking beam from the inside of an upright frame and measuring the length to the opposite upright frame, you will have accuracy on the width.

To measure the depth required for the pallets and goods to sit, measure the crossbeam from top to bottom. This step is very important in helping you determine the amount of weight your pallet racking can support. The larger the beaming face, the higher the load capacity.

Height

This measure tells you how tall the front of the upright frame of the pallet racking beam is from top to bottom.

Take your tape measure and start to measure from the bottom of the frame above the base plate, measuring to the top. When you have completed this and have the width, depth and height all accounted for, you need to consider other factors to determine the correct system.

Extra Considerations

You will need to ensure that weight capacity is comparable with the stock you will be placed on to the system. You will also need to determine which type of pallet racking is required in either box beams or open beams.

Box beams are completely enclosed and used for heavy loads, ideally for storing pallets on timber decks. Open beams are utilised for lighter materials goods and have wire mesh decks or chipboard.
