Preventing Damage to Bagged Goods in the Warehouse

Bags are a common solution for the packaging of many goods. They can aid with almost anything, from pet supplies to beauty products. They are flexible, save space and are the easiest way to transport products of certain sizes. However, preventing damage to bagged goods in the warehouse can be difficult. Too many of us have made the attempt to cram in as much as we can into one bag. This can make the bags more fragile and overstuffed.

Preventing Damage to Bagged Goods

Any warehouse that works with bagged goods must be aware of how to safely and carefully store these items. This is to prevent any damage or loss of product. When while stored in a pallet, bagged goods still account for a lot of loss and damage inside warehouses. However, with careful planning, this can be avoided.

Stacking Order

As you can imagine, bags should not be stacked with a ton of weight on top of them. This applies even if the other products are also bagged goods. As anything that comes in a bag won’t be anything denser than something such as dog food. By improperly stacking your bags, you could be faced with a lot of damaged products and torn bags. This is a mess that no one in your warehouse will want to deal with.

Handling

Stacking order can help with proper picking as well, something that is another common issue. In many cases, bagged products are kept in standard pallet racks or wire shelving, just like anything else. However, many workers can get into the habit of picking the nearest bags as opposed to the bags on top. This is a poor picking strategy for any packaging, especially the less durable. Make sure that your workers are well-trained to level out the stacks on your warehouse shelves. You want to be confident in the knowledge that they will take bags from the top-down to prevent injury.

Machinery

This idea may not work for all warehouses or product types. In many cases, it would be wise to avoid using machines to move bagged goods. Of course, this will depend on the weight involved. However, the majority of accidents involving either individually bagged products or entire pallets stems from improper forklift use. As you can imagine their packaging is slightly more prone to tears. This is due to the usage from the forklift and lifter. Try moving as many bagged products manually to ensure nothing gets damaged or torn during transport.

Finally, it is important to make sure that all bagged goods are stored accordingly. If your items are being shipped to you in a pre-defined stack, they may need opening and reordering. This is to ensure they work with the rest of the items you already have stored. It helps to get everything stacked optimally for FIFO/popularity based picking.
