Tips on How to Effectively Make the Most of Your Shelving and Racking

Shelving and racking in your closet, garage, bathroom, or office can save you a lot of time and money. You can accomplish more and it’s easier to stay focused when you aren’t wasting time digging through piles of papers. When your space is cluttered and unorganised things tend to get lost and you feel stressed and out of control. There is nothing worse than running late and frantically looking through piles of clutter for the tickets to the game that you know you “put here somewhere”. Climbing over piles of “stuff”, forgetting where you put things, and frantically searching at the last minute for the only pair of shoes that go with your outfit is time consuming and stressful. The day starts and ends in a chaotic state. So how do you fix the problem of clutter? You organise it.

Organising Your Life One Shelf at a Time

Shelves are the easiest way to make use of wall space. They also make it much easier to find whatever needs to be found. Not to mention a tidy space looks much better than piles of books, papers, and other miscellaneous items strewn about the countertops and floors.

Once you have decided where you want to install shelving, ensure that your shelves are the proper size for the space. The shelves should be as deep as whatever you intend to place on them. Shelving that is too big for your items wastes precious space and can actually make it more difficult to get organised. If you have to reach behind items to get to another item, chances are something will end up falling and breaking.

Use wire racks in the pantry or install a unit to fit under the bed that will neatly divide and store the extra linens. You can put up shelving under your television or in bedroom and hall closets. One of the most important things about shelving is to make sure they fit the space and can stand up to the pressure. They shouldn’t bow or buckle in the middle and you don’t want them ripping out of the wall dumping everything to the floor. If you will be attaching them to the wall, make sure they are securely attached.

Shelving Ideas

Shelving isn’t just for closets and pantries. There are places throughout you home where shelving units would free up valuable space. Put a shelf (or two) over the washer in the laundry room. It’s perfect for storing soaps, bleach and other cleaning supplies. In the bathroom you can install a unit over the toilet to hold extra toilet paper and hand towels or install shelvingg in an unused corner and use it as a book or display shelf. Don’t forget the garage. When organising a cluttered garage it helps to sort into two piles what you want to keep and what you want to throw away or donate. Since the garage is subject to the heat and cold, you may want to consider plastic or PVC shelving. Hang overhead racks to store big bulky items like Christmas trees or items that you no longer use but want to keep.
